The Near West Side CDC, through the West Haven Sports Club, runs programming in baseball, basketball and fitness in partnership with Crane High School. The club has an ambitious goal to introduce new programs that provide activities for grade school students, high school students, adults and seniors.  All of the programs are designed to highlight Crane as a focal point for not only youth education but also to strengthen bonds across the community.

West Haven Youth Winter League (YWL)
The West Haven Youth Winter League consists of two divisions with a ‘beginners’ league focusing on 5th and 6th graders and a intermediate league with 7th and 8th graders.  The league starts with five weeks of skill training to teach the youth basic basketball fundamentals.  After successfully completing skill training, the participants will be placed on teams for competitive play.  The Youth Winter League will take place on Saturdays from 9pm-2pm and will start in November. The League will provide slots for 160 participants.  In the classroom, participants learn about being leaders on and off the court, the importance of discipline, the benefits of being a student athlete. The YWL encourages parents to participate on a weekly basis by providing token rewards for parent attendance.

Family Fitness Boot Camp
Last fall at Crane Tech the West Haven Sports Club introduced the Family Fitness Boot Camp, which is designed to encourage families to work together to adopt a healthy lifestyle consisting of exercise and healthy eating.  To participate, families (minimum of two individuals) must enroll as a team. The families compete with other West Haven families in such areas as track and field, pool exercises, push up and sit up contests, etc. Each member initially works with a personal trainer to establish goals and set baseline performance measures.  A cash prize will be rewarded upon completion of the boot camp.

Community Tournaments
The West Haven Sports Club provides residents an opportunity to compete in chess, checkers, spades and bid-wisk.  Each month a cash prize of $300 is awarded to the tournament champion for each game.

Senior Citizen Fitness
Senior citizens can participate in a training regimen designed by a professional personal trainer familiar with geriatric health. The seniors can participate in water and track exercise at Crane Tech.

The Near West Side CDC is eager to bridge the gap between the West Haven Community and Crane Tech.  The goal is to make Crane Tech the central hub where the community will view the high school as a positive attraction for all local residents.
