Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation
Community inspired development
Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation is a member-based community development corporation working for the redevelopment of communities on the northwest side of Chicago, by and for the low and moderate-income people who live in these areas.
It seeks to enrich and protect the communities of West Town, Humboldt Park, Logan Square and Hermosa through housing development and preservation, economic empowerment, and leadership development and organizing.
Sports and fitness programming
Bickerdike supports multiple programs that use sports and fitness to create stronger individuals and a stronger neighborhood. It is a sponsor of the Sunday Parkways program that closes boulevards to allow biking and pedestrian activity; a member of the Greater Humboldt Park Community of Wellness; and a host organization for the Spring into Sports event at Orr High School.
BickerBikes – This innovative program explores the bicycle as a simple solution to Humboldt Park's childhood obesity epidemic. The eight-week summer program for teens uses biking to promote health and fitness, while also productively engaging youth and providing them with marketable job skills. Students participate in bicycle parades, bike-fixing operations at local events, and group tours around the city. Launched in 2004, BickerBikes is a partnership between Bickerdike Redevelopment Corp and the Active Transportation Alliance. The program operates out of West Town Bikes and serves youth in Humboldt Park, West Town, Logan Square and Hermosa.
